Michigan’s PPE and hazard-communication regulations have recently been updated to align with newer federal standards — an important change for workplaces handling chemicals or using personal protective equipment. As of August 2025, MIOSHA revised requirements for both PPE and hazard communication.

The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) standard now explicitly requires that PPE fits properly. Ill-fitting gear may fail to protect workers or even create new hazards. Hazard communication standards have also been updated to reflect the most recent version of the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for classifying and labeling chemicals.

Employers should evaluate whether the PPE in use meets the “proper fit” requirement. This may involve ordering new sizes, maintaining equipment properly, or retraining employees. Workplaces handling hazardous substances must also ensure chemical labels and safety data sheets are up to date with the new hazard-communication format.

This update helps reduce risks of miscommunication about chemical hazards, especially in workplaces with multilingual staff or temporary employees. It’s a good opportunity to audit PPE inventories and hazard communication procedures to ensure compliance and safety.
