Tesla Leases 2 More Office Buildings in Fremont, With Room for Hundreds of Employees

Luxury electric carmaker Tesla is leasing and renovating a pair of office buildings in Fremont that could eventually house more than a thousand employees, the San Jose Mercury News reports. The two offices at 6900 Dumbarton Circle total a little over 229,000 square feet and are owned by real estate development company Peery Arrillaga. The buildings had previously been leased as the global headquarters of the now-defunct biotech company Genitope. Tesla is in the middle of a hiring blitz: The company listed 2,483 open jobs worldwide as of Friday morning, with 516 open positions in Fremont alone. The company’s shares have jumped 76 percent in the last 12 months, largely fueled by the launch of its much-anticipated Model 3, its modestly priced electric car. The buildings at 6800 and 6900 Dumbarton Circle are located just off Dumbarton Bridge — roughly 15 minutes from Tesla’s auto assembly plant across town and 30 minutes from its headquarters in Palo Alto. Tesla runs 12 major offices worldwide, and leases a number of smaller buildings, like its design and production facility in Lathrop. The workforce at its Fremont factory has ballooned to more than 10,000 as car production ramps up, making Tesla the largest manufacturer in the Bay Area. Peery Arrillaga lists both buildings as being in “shell condition,” which means they’ll need to be renovated before Tesla’s employees can move in. Construction crews were reportedly onsite this week. The offices were built in 2003 and 2004, according to building data from PropertyShark. Genitope moved into the buildings in 2005, signing a 15-and-a-half year lease. But by mid-2008, the company’s shares were trading for pennies after failing a key drug trial. Gentiope laid off more than 180 employees and told Peery Arrillaga it would have trouble paying its remaining $97.9 million lease obligation on the buildings.
